The Conference of the Birds or Speech of the Birds (Manṭiq-uṭ-Ṭayr, also known as Maqāmāt-uṭ-Ṭuyūr; 1177), is a celebrated literary masterpiece of Persian literature by poet Farid ud-Din Attar, commonly known as Attar of Nishapur. In the poem, the birds of the world gather to decide who is to be their sovereign, as they have none. The Conference of the Birds (Manteq at-Tair) is the best-known work of Farid ud-Din Attar, a Persian poet who was born at some time during the twelfth century in Neishapour (where Omar Khayyam had also been born), in north-east Iran, and died in the same city early in the thirteenth century. Sholeh Wolpé is an Iranian-American poet and writer.
